Music and Vibration From A Mystical Perspective
"Let us release ourselves into the rhythm of God and
thereby become part of the rhythm of this universe."
(Joel S. Goldsmith: "A Parenthesis In Eternity")
All physical matter is in a state of vibration, and scientists have finally discovered what mystics have known for eons: that our universe is made up of frequencies of vibration. In fact everything that exists in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual realms does so on a vibratory basis. This is obvious if you consider that electrons are always moving and vibrating.
Mystics of past ages who have perceived the vibratory reality of the universe have called this vibration by various names. Some have called this primordial vibration the music of the spheres, the unstruck melody, shabd, audible life stream, the song divine, the light within, the logos or word (forever speaking/vibrating) through which and by which all things were created. In Hindu scriptures this vibrational hum of the Universe is known as AUM (some pronounce it OM) because when heard or perceived by the higher senses it sounds like a vibrating humming sound.
In Jewish Scriptures the "Name" of the Lord where there is safety, strength, and salvation is none other than the cosmic vibration of AUM, the Word of God, the Messiah, the "endless light". In Christian scriptures it is said that everything was made by and through the Logos. Logos in Greek means word or speech. Vibration is the essence of speech. The Word or Logos of God is a forever reverberating vibrational energy/light from which all creation sprang, and which is invisibly present in and through and behind physical reality.
You Are A Unique Musical Song
Whatever your belief system, if you have any at all, the one truth behind the many different religions is that of "hearing" (not necessarily with the physical ears) the cosmic sound and following it back to the Source. A truly happy, meaningful life is the natural outcome of tuning in to a higher level of vibration (spiritual consciousness, divine consciousness, cosmic consciousness, Christ consciousness, Messiah consciousness) and making a conscious choice to live your day to day life from that level, riding the flow of the inner wisdom and inner music that is perceived from that higher level of mind. Those who choose to flow in tune with the inner music (divine love, divine wisdom, spiritual guidance) reflect the unique musical song they are at the core of their being. This inner music, sound current, energy, or vibration is the source of a truly spiritual life of which religious superiority or mere ethical living are but imitations.
Our very nature at its core is a unique musical melody, as well as a spark of endless divine light, but our lives often reflect otherwise because we are not in tune with the inner whisper, the inner love, the inner energy, vibration, and Spirit. The real "inner music" is vibrating throughout all creation, through vibrational levels of existence (physical, etheric, astral, causal), right up to the pure realms of Spirit (beyond the lower vibrating levels) which is our true home.
The following chart about the inner planes of creation, and the various aspects of the divine light and sound current, may be of help in understanding this subject.
AUM: The Liberating Vibration
According to the Vedas aum is the 'Sound of Light'. In the Sikh scriptures the way back to the Creator and the highest spiritual planes is by following the light and sound of God which manifests to the spiritual senses as a vibrating hum of energy.
Aum is said to be the primordial sound that was present at the creation of the universe. It is said to be the original sound that contains all other sounds, all words, all languages and all mantras. In this sense, Aum may be "the word". "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1).
This concept of Aum and "the word" creating our universe is supported by the vibrational resonance waveform metaphysical view of the nature of reality. This view is spoken of both in philosophical and scientific contexts. String theory for example suggests that subatomic "strings" oscillate to take on vibrational modes, therein forming matter.
This vibration is the foundation of all matter, and exists underneath all matter like a substratum. It is the primordial vibration of the Universe and even science agrees that atoms and molecules that form the Universe are made up of energy vibration.
The sound of aum designates the whole of the universe, including the physical, etheric, astral, and causal planes, and the spiritual planes beyond those lower vibrating planes. According to the Manduka Upanishad the four elements of aum are explained as an allegory of the four planes of consciousness. The following chart will help clarify this:
||Usually associated with:
(pronounced "AH" as in "father")
Normal waking consciousness, the 3 lower chakras (root, sacral, solar plexus - Muladhara, Swasthisthana, Manipura), the physical world, tamas (ignorance and darkness). Color association: red, orange, yellow, musical notes C, D, E.
(pronounced "oo" as in "who")
|Alpha & Theta Waves
The sub consciousness, dreaming, the heart and throat chakras (Anahata and Vishuddha), the etheric plane, astral plane (desire world), rajas (passion and dynamism). Color association: green and blue. Musical notes: F, G.
The unconscious, deep, dreamless sleep, the third eye and crown chakras (Ajna and Sahasrara), causal plane (as well as mental plane) out of which the physical world and astral worlds emerge, sattwa (harmony, clarity and light). Color association: Indigo, Violet. Musical notes: A, B.
The Silence after chanting AUM represents the Super Conscious state and refers to the absolute reality that is the substratum for each of the other three realities (physical, astral, causal). After the sound of Aum there is silence; this symbolises that which is "above" the head (i.e. beyond thinking), the ineffable: Spirit, the Atman. White light. Musical note C. In Indian music, Aum corresponds to the frequencies 136.1 Hz, 204.15 Hz, and 272.2 Hz (sa, pa, and sa of the next octave).
I quote Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami:
"AUM harmonizes the physical body with the mental and spiritual forces. Sound A (pronounced AH [as in Father]), and center the sound in the solar plexus region of the body. Next intone U (pronounced OO [as in who]), and center this sound through the throat area. After that, intone M (pronounced MMM), sending this vibration through the cranium by placing the front teeth tightly together. First chant them separately, then blend the sounds together, forming AUM. This mantra is the essence of sound itself. All sounds blended together intone AUM. Listen to the sum total of all the noises in a big city, and you will hear the AUM as in a sea shell or the ocean waves. This is only the manifestation of creation from the creative power. As you intone these sounds you are releasing your creative energy into your creative centers in the brain. Then they are allowed to pur forth back through your mental, emotional and spiritual body to create a new world for you."
Chanting aum completely silently, with eyes closed, and with your thought force and visualization centered on the Ajna chakra (the point between the eyebrows at the top of the nose) is also a potent method of chanting Aum (silently) that is not dependent on having a human voice box. So anyone can benefit from it.
Although anyone can chant aum either verbally or silently the important thing is the intent, devotion, motive, and aspiration behind the chant. It is said that "one minute of sincere chanting is superior to a thousand hours of mere sounding of the words. A parrot can be taught to recite a mantra but this will be just mere vibrations in the air. It is the love and worship behind the sound that counts."
Primary Benefits of Chanting AUM:
* Builds the power of intuition.
* Bestows and increases Psychic Powers.
* Increases and refines awareness.
* Provides clarity of thought, insights and wisdom.
* Allows one to connect to the "inner guru" or "higher self" for guidance and inspiration.
* Builds the Yogic Mind or Neutral Mind which is free from attachments of the ego.
* Build the power to read others and detect their subtle and gross energetic conditions.
* Promotes flow of Kundalini Energy into the higher centers.
* Promotes the ability to have Lucid Dreams.
* Allows for non-verbal communication.
* Builds focus and one pointedness of the mind.
* Improves your vision.
* Promotes health and wellbeing.
The science of frequencies and vibrations and how they effect people is something that has been around for eons. Our very nature at its core is a unique musical melody, as well as a spark of endless divine light, but our lives often reflect otherwise because we are not in tune with the inner whisper, the inner love, the inner energy and Spirit. The real "inner music" is vibrating throughout all creation, through all subtle levels, right up to the pure realms of Spirit which is our true home.
A truly happy, meaningful life is the natural outcome of tuning into the music of the spheres, the unstruck melody, to cosmic vibration and following it back to the Source.
Wrong choices and bad decisions often put us on a path of unnecessary pain and suffering whether it be physical, mental, or emotional suffering, or a combination of all three. The root cause of all pain and suffering (from which all symptoms spring) is lack of conscious awareness of our higher nature, and lack of harmony and communion with God, Spirit, Cosmic Energy, Aum.
Although nothing can replace the cosmic sound and the genuine life changing benefits that come with it as it is intuitively perceived and experienced through our spiritual senses, nevertheless there are sounds made with the human voice, as well as with technology, which can be used as tools for starting us on this path of health, healing, change and transformation.
In some cultures drums, flutes, chanting, chimes, flickering light, herbs etc. are used for the purpose of focusing the brain to a specific beta/alpha/theta/delta level of mind for one reason or anther whether it be to attain to altered states or consciousness, or to improve health and blance the emotions, or for purposes of enlightenment and becoming one with God. Likewise technological methods such as brainwave entrainment by means of listening to binaural beats and isochronic tones are used for the same purposes.
Certain brainwave music sessions can free your mind and spirit and help you get in touch with your spiritual level of consciousness. A truly healthy, happy, and meaningful life is the outcome of living from this higher level of consciousness and basing life's decisions upon the intuitive guidance we receive from that level. From this deeper level of being we absorb the cosmic energy needed for following the higher wisdom, and for maintaining a healthy physical, mental, emotional and spiritual life.
