What Are Chakras?
(The information below should be used for educational purposes only and should not be used to diagnose or treat disease.)
The human body has energy centers with different rates of vibration or sound. These energy centers are called charkas. These energy centers are not in the human body. Rather they are in what is called the subtle or astral body - the aspect of us that experiences astral travel, out of body experiences, and lucid dreams. The subtle or astral body is an energetic form of the physical body.
There are several chakras in the subtle body, but there are 7 main charkas. Their location corresponds to the human spine starting at the base of the spine and running to the crown of the head. Each of the 7 main chakras correspond to the seven notes on a musical scale (C, D, E, F, G, A, B). And each chakra also has a corresponding color (seven colors of the rainbow - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet). Colors, like sound/vibration, can have an impact on our body's energies. They can help to clear negative emotions and energy and restore balance. See the chart below for the corresponding color and note for each chakra.

Each chakra refers to a certain level of energy vibration and in the various chakras the physical and emotional aspects of a human being come together. For example, when one is healthy or sick, angry or happy, sad or glad, depressed, hateful, mean, hating people and life, or content with life, happy, loving, caring etc., etc. all this reflects whether the chakras are blocked, or vibrating smoothly. It also indicates which chakra or chakras are dominant in a persons life.
There is an entire science behind working with the chakras and cleansing them so the human body, mind, emotions, and soul run smoothly, efficiently and are in harmony not only within oneself, but the person as a whole is at peace with others. All the commands, ethics, and moral codes in all ancient and modern religions are methods that are used (unconsciously) to cleanse and balance the chakras. Certain yoga techniques (such as pranayama and/or chanting mantras) are used to raise the quality of the energy vibration in specific chakras.
Side Note: It is worth noting that sound (creating certain vibrations using your voice) stimulates the chakras. While in a state of deep meditation ancient seers in India came up with different mantras for stimulating the different chakras. The chakras affect the health and emotions in the region of the body that they govern. By using the correlating mantra you can stimulate the chakra to help heal the body, and release the emotions.
In traditional Hatha Yoga & Ayurveda, the seven Bija mantras associated with the chakras are:
LAM (Lum) - for the root chakra
VAM (Vum) - for the sacral (naval) chakra
RAM (Rum) - for the solar plexus chakra
YAM (Yum) - for the heart chakra
HAM (Hum) - for the throat chakra
AUM (or OM) - for the third eye chakra
AH (Ahh..) - for the crown chakra
Music can also be used for chakra balancing, but it depends upon the type of music. Sound is vibration, hence music is vibration. Music and sound, good or bad, influence us and impact our energy systems. Sound, either as music, musical notes or chanting, can be used for chakra balancing. Repetition supports bringing the body, mind, and soul into a meditative state, where healing occurs, and creates a continuous vibrational environment. See Chakra Sounds (pdf)
A newer method for stimulating the chakras, but not as well-known, is the use of chakra frequencies i.e. listening to frequencies that correspond to the frequency of each chakra. It just so happens that each of the 7 main chakras closely (not exactly) correspond with the notes on the musical scale:
Musical Scale - C, do (264 Hz) | root chakra (256 hz and 194.18 hz)
Musical Scale - D, re (297 Hz) | sacral (naval) chakra (288 hz and 210.42 hz)
Musical Scale - E, mi (330 Hz) | solar plexus chakra (320 hz and 126.22 hz)
Musical Scale - F, fa (352 Hz) | heart chakra (341 hz and 136.10 hz)
Musical Scale - G, so (396 Hz) | throat chakra (384 hz and 141.27 hz)
Musical Scale - A, la (440 Hz) | third eye chakra (448 hz and 221.23 hz)
Musical Scale - B, ti (495 Hz) | crown chakra (480 hz and 172.06 hz)
Side Note: Although there are different opinions about the musical notations, frequencies, and colors associated with the chakras, I have include the most common opinion in what I am sharing here. The different musical notes or frequencies, and colors of the 7 main chakras, can help us understand why we feel different, more relaxed and less stressed, or on the other hand more agitated, more anxiety, depression, or stress, when we listen to certain styles of music, sound vibrations or frequencies.
Sound Therapy and the Chakras
Different forms of sound therapy have been used by many cultures for thousands of years. Sound vibrations influence us on a physical/etheric, emotional/astral, mental/causal, and spiritual level. Our body and chakra centers resonate at certain vibrations or sound frequencies. If any part of our body or chakra is out of balance, it can gradually be brought back into balance by listening to a sound frequency for the corresponding body part or chakra. Through the use of sound therapy eventually any disturbances in the body or chakras will soon resonate to the vibration thus producing the right frequency in the body's organ or chakra center.
Side Note: This process can open the sub conscious and unconscious mind and release unpleasant thoughts, emotions or memories. It is all part of the healing process.
